1. Please introduce yourself. My name is Dr. Hyon Min (Catherine) Shin and am a native of Seoul, South Korea. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Government from Smith College and my Master’s of Business Administration from Ewha Woman’s University. Prior to becoming an occupational therapist, I worked in various industries and international markets in entertainment, fashion and publishing. Drawn by the profession’s holistic approach to health and wellness and commitment towards improved quality of life across the lifespan, I pursued a career in occupational therapy. She received both my Master’s and Clinical Doctorate in Occupational Therapy from the University of Southern California. Prior to joining the Chan Division as faculty, I practiced in pediatric occupational therapy and workplace wellness. As a member of the Admissions Team of the Chan Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy I am committed to improving diversity, equity, and inclusivity to healthcare and higher education globally. 2. Could you briefly introduce the USC OT program? The USC Chan Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy offers both undergraduate and graduate programs to students across various stages of their occupational science and occupational therapy careers. For students who wish to position themselves as a research scientist. We offer a PhD in Occupational Science after earning their bachelor’s degree in any field. For students who wish to become a practicing occupational therapist we offer: The Entry-Level Doctorate of Occupational Therapy (OTD). The USC Chan Entry-Level OTD program is built upon one of the nation’s top-ranked occupational therapy graduate programs, according to U.S. News and World Report. This program is designed for students with bachelor’s degrees in fields other than occupational therapy. The USC Chan Entry-Level OTD program requires the completion of 96 units of coursework (please note: proposed 2024-27 curriculum revision requires 97 units), including:
The Post-Professional Master’s degree program is designed for the individual who is already a certified or board-eligible occupational therapist, or an international therapist who has completed a baccalaureate degree in occupational therapy from an accredited college or university or a program approved by the World Federation of Occupational Therapy® (WFOT). Students who have not graduated from a WFOT accredited program can also submit an application that will be reviewed by our committee. In 1947, USC Chan officially established the world’s first Post-Professional Master of Arts degree program in occupational therapy and we have continued to grow as a global community. Our students and alumni hail from 63 countries on 6 continents and we welcome international students. The USC Chan Post-Professional Master’s program requires the completion of 32 units of coursework, including:
The USC Post-Professional OTD program is designed with flexibility for the working professional. Coursework can be taken completely remotely either full-time or part-time and your courses and residency can be tailored for your professional interests and career goals. Intensive mentorship allows you to learn alongside outstanding faculty and to network within the Trojan Family. The OTD program offers four leadership pathways:
3. How familiar are you with the graduation schools of students from Korea who have been admitted to the USC OT program through WFOT-accredited institutions? I have not yet had the pleasure of advising students from Korea into our Post-Professional programs. 4. Do you know how the academic performance of these students compares to that of students from other countries/regions? While I do not have first hand experience, I have heard from my colleagues that previous students from Korea have demonstrated excellent academic performance in our programs. 5. If there are students admitted from non-WFOT-accredited institutions, do you know how they are adapting to the USC OT program? Students who are admitted from non-WFOT programs do not have a significantly different experience compared to their peers from WFOT-accredited institutions when attending our programs. However, I have heard anecdotally their experiences post-graduation have differed in their pursuance of their clinical license to practice in the United States. |
